Adult Beginner Fundamentals (Ages 14+)

This one-hour class is designed for adults and teens ages 14 and up who are new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or looking to build a stronger foundation in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, self-defense, and grappling fundamentals.

At Lineage BJJ®, we want new students to feel comfortable from the start. That’s why we give the first 10 minutes of class for students to drill, light roll / positional roll, stretch, or warm up on their own, while also giving our staff time to get new students situated for their first class and help them feel welcomed and prepared.

From there, instructors lead the class through the core principles of Jiu-Jitsu—teaching the essential positions, movements, escapes, controls, and submissions that form the foundation of real progress on the mat. Students also begin learning how techniques connect together so they can start developing timing, confidence, and an overall game plan.

Classes often include technical instruction, positional drilling, practical application, and controlled training, helping students improve in a structured and supportive environment.

This class is ideal for beginners, but it is not just for new students. Intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to attend regularly to sharpen details, reinforce fundamentals, and continue building the habits that make everything else in Jiu-Jitsu work better.

Whether your goal is self-defense, fitness, confidence, stress relief, or long-term skill development, Adult Beginner Fundamentals provides a welcoming and professional environment to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Southern Maryland the right way.

BJJ – Intermediate / Advanced (Ages 14+) / No-Gi (Leg Locks)

This class is designed for intermediate and advanced students who are ready to go beyond the basics and develop a deeper understanding of Jiu-Jitsu.

Students will explore more advanced positions, transitions, leg lock concepts, and problem-solving strategies while learning how to recognize and respond to challenges that come up during live rolling. The goal is not just to know techniques, but to understand how and when to apply them effectively.

This session is taught in the No-Gi format, creating a faster-paced training environment that helps students improve timing, movement, control, and adaptability. Instruction includes No-Gi-specific techniques, positional drills, and live rolling to help students sharpen their overall grappling game in a structured, technical setting.

This class is taught by Bray Dunaway, who began his Jiu-Jitsu training in San Diego in the Eddie Bravo 10th Planet system under the direct coaching of Richie “The Boogieman” Martinez. His background brings valuable No-Gi experience and a modern technical perspective to the class, especially in areas involving movement, control, and submission threats.

Around here, some people jokingly call it “Meniscus Monday”—but make no mistake, this is a serious class for students who want to improve their No-Gi game and push their understanding to a higher level.

Open to ages 14 and up for intermediate / advanced students, or by instructor permission.

If you want it a little cleaner and less joking, use this line instead:

Some students jokingly refer to it as “Meniscus Monday,” but this class is built for serious No-Gi training and technical development.

Mat Munchkins (Ages 3–4)

This 30-minute class is designed specifically for our youngest students and provides a structured, age-appropriate introduction to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in a safe, supportive, and engaging environment.

Mat Munchkins is not babysitting, and it is not intense martial arts training. It is a carefully designed program that helps children build confidence, coordination, listening skills, balance, and positive social habits through movement, guided instruction, and age-appropriate activities.

Each class includes simple warm-ups, basic movements, beginner-friendly Jiu-Jitsu concepts, and fun drills or games that help reinforce focus, body awareness, teamwork, and following directions. The goal is to create a positive first experience on the mats while helping young children feel comfortable learning in a group setting.

For many students, this is their first structured class experience. That is why we keep the environment calm, encouraging, and developmentally appropriate.

Mat Munchkins is a great first step for children ages 3–4 who are ready to build confidence, learn to listen, and begin developing the foundation for future martial arts training.

Adult Beginner Fundamentals (Ages 14+)
This one-hour class is designed for adults and teens (ages 14+) who are new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or looking to strengthen their foundational skills. The first 10 minutes of class are self-directed, allowing students to choose how they prepare—whether through stretching, calisthenics, light rolling, or working with a partner.

After the warm-up, instructors lead the class through essential techniques, focusing on key movements, positions, and transitions that form the foundation of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Positional drilling and practical applications are often included to help students develop confidence and fluidity in their training.

While this class is ideal for beginners, intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to attend to refine their skills and reinforce their fundamentals.

Adult Beginner Fundamentals provides a welcoming and structured environment for learning self-defense, improving fitness, and building confidence on the mats.

BJJ Int/Adv (Ages 14+) / Positionals

This one-hour class is designed for intermediate and advanced students, as well as students with instructor approval or equivalent experience.

Positionals is one of our most popular classes because it gives students the chance to focus on the parts of Jiu-Jitsu that matter most—what to do when the position is already happening.

Instead of starting from neutral every round, students work from specific scenarios and learn how to escape, defend, control, and submit from key positions such as:

  • mount
  • side control
  • back position
  • north-south
  • guard
  • and other common live-training situations

This format helps students develop better timing, sharper reactions, and a deeper understanding of what actually works under pressure.

Each class is structured around live positional training, focused drilling, and problem-solving, allowing students to get repeated reps in the situations that come up most often during rolling and competition. That means faster growth, better awareness, and more confidence when the pressure is on.

Because students are working from real positions instead of always starting from scratch, this class is one of the best ways to tighten up your game, fix weak areas, and improve your ability to stay calm and effective in difficult spots.

If you want to become harder to control, harder to finish, and more dangerous from every major position, Positionals is a must-attend class for anyone wishing to compete.

BJJ – Fundamentals (Ages 14+) / No-Gi (Wrestling)

This class focuses on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the No-Gi format with a strong emphasis on wrestling-based takedowns for No-Gi competition and live grappling.

Designed for students ages 14 and up, this class helps build the stand-up skills that are often essential in No-Gi training, especially for students who want to improve their ability to control where the match takes place.

Training includes instruction on wrestling takedowns, entries, setups, level changes, body positioning, balance, and control, along with No-Gi-specific grappling concepts that translate directly into rolling and competition. Students learn how to close distance, finish takedowns more effectively, and become more confident on the feet without relying on the gi.

Techniques are adjusted based on experience level. Newer students can build a strong foundation in movement, posture, and takedown mechanics, while more experienced students can sharpen timing, chain attacks together, and refine the details that make their wrestling more effective in live situations.

Classes may include technical instruction, takedown drilling, positional work, and live application, helping students develop both confidence and practical skill in a structured, fast-paced environment.

Whether your goal is No-Gi competition, better stand-up for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, self-defense, or becoming a more complete grappler, this class is a valuable part of your training.

At Calvert MMA Academy®, we want new students to feel comfortable from the start.

Instructor-Led Open Mat (Ages 14+)

This session gives adults and teens ages 14 and up the chance to get extra mat time in a more flexible training environment while still benefiting from direct instructor guidance.

Like all Open Mat sessions at our academy, this session does not count against monthly class limits on memberships, giving students added value and more opportunity to improve without using one of their regular class counts.

What makes Instructor-Led Open Mat different is how it begins.

At the start of the session, the instructor will ask participants if they have any questions, problems, or specific positions they want help with. This could include trouble finishing a technique, escaping a position, improving timing, understanding details from class, or solving problems that keep coming up during rolling.

From there, the instructor helps students work through those issues by giving feedback, refining technique, cleaning up details, and helping them tighten up their BJJ game.

This is not a formal class for teaching brand-new techniques from scratch. Instead, it is a chance to get more out of what you are already learning by asking questions, troubleshooting weak areas, and improving through direct guidance and repetition.

In many ways, this session feels like a semi-private lesson in a group setting.

Students can drill, positional roll, flow roll, or get live rounds in while also having access to an experienced instructor who can help them make corrections and better understand what they are doing.

This makes the session especially valuable for:

  • students who want extra help with techniques from class
  • beginners looking to build confidence and understanding
  • intermediate students trying to sharpen details
  • advanced students looking to troubleshoot and refine their game

Whether your goal is self-defense, competition, faster improvement, or simply getting more comfortable on the mat, Instructor-Led Open Mat is one of the best ways to gain extra reps, get questions answered, and make meaningful progress.

It is flexible like Open Mat — but with the added benefit of direct instructor attention to help you improve faster.

Judo for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Competition & Self-Defense

Held every other Saturday, this one-hour class helps students build the stand-up skills that carry over directly into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competition, self-defense, and overall grappling development.

Training focuses on the core areas that matter most: breakfalls, balance, movement, clinch control, off-balancing, and traditional Judo throws that translate effectively to both Jiu-Jitsu and real-world situations.

This class is not just about learning how to throw. It is about learning how to stay balanced, control another person standing, create better reactions, and become harder to take down or dominate on the feet.

For BJJ students, this class helps close one of the most important gaps in training by improving takedowns, posture, control in the clinch, and the ability to connect standing grappling to what happens once the match hits the ground.

For self-defense, students build practical awareness, body control, and confidence in standing situations under pressure.

We are also in the process of joining USA Judo, which will allow eligible students to pursue official Judo rank and compete in Judo tournaments under the LINEAGE® banner. Students who simply want to train Judo to improve their BJJ, takedowns, and self-defense can do so without pursuing rank.

This class is open to adult members of all levels, approved youth competition team members, and select youth students with coach approval.

If you want to become a more complete martial artist, improve your takedowns, and add real stand-up skill to your game, this class is a valuable part of your training.
