Professor Jim Thrift

5th-Degree Black Belt in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

Jim Thrift is the founder of Lineage BJJ® and Calvert MMA Academy® and one of the most experienced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructors in Southern Maryland.

He began training in martial arts in 1984 and was introduced to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in the early 1990s while serving in federal service. At a time when authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was difficult to find on the East Coast, he traveled extensively to train directly at the source—learning the art as it was originally intended to be taught.

Over decades, he trained with multiple members of the Gracie family, earning his black belt and subsequent degrees directly under Grandmaster Relson Gracie. His instruction reflects the core Gracie philosophy: leverage over strength, control over chaos, and preparation for real situations—not just ideal ones.

Professionally, Jim is a U.S. Navy veteran and retired from the United States Secret Service, where his work required calm decision-making under pressure, precision, and real-world readiness. These same standards define how he teaches: structured, deliberate, and focused on long-term development rather than shortcuts or trends.

He founded Calvert MMA Academy® in 2007 and later expanded with Lineage BJJ®, creating two academies operating under one curriculum and an uncompromising standard. He remains actively involved across both locations, ensuring consistency in instruction, safety, and student development.

While competition is available, his primary focus remains unchanged: teaching Jiu-Jitsu as a complete system students can rely on—for self-defense, confidence, and real-world application.

How This Shows Up on the Mat

Students notice the difference immediately. Classes are structured, purposeful, and professional—even when the training is demanding. Techniques are taught with context, so students understand not just what to do, but why it works and when to apply it.

Beginners are guided with patience and clarity. Experienced students are challenged with precision and depth. Progress is measured and earned—not rushed or handed out.

Safety is not optional. It is built into the culture.

This approach reflects decades of training where preparation mattered—and where results had real consequences. The outcome is a training environment where students improve consistently, support one another, and train without ego or intimidation.

Many families choose Lineage BJJ® and Calvert MMA® because they want instruction they can trust. Adults stay because the training makes sense, the standards remain consistent, and the environment is professional without being impersonal.

Private Lessons, Seminars & Specialized Training

Professor Thrift offers private and semi-private instruction for individuals and small groups. Sessions are tailored to each student’s goals—whether that’s self-defense, competition preparation, technical refinement, or confidence building. Active members receive preferred rates.

He is also available for seminars and specialized training events. Recent sessions focus on Gracie self-defense and real-world application, including stand-up control, clinch work, and decision-making under pressure—areas often overlooked in sport-only programs.

These sessions deliver practical skills students can apply immediately—both on the mat and outside of it.
