A Journey Rooted in Martial Arts Excellence

Professor Jim’s introduction to martial arts began during his senior year of high school, sparking a passion that would define his life. Training under esteemed instructors such as Ki Wang Kim, Mike Warren, and Amos Johnson, he earned his black belt in Moo Duk Kwan, Tang Soo Do, and Hapkido. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, he was an accomplished competitor in point fighting, Judo tournaments, and full-contact kickboxing.

In the 1990s, while serving with the U.S. Secret Service, Professor Jim discovered Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. The art’s effectiveness in self-defense captivated him, and he began training under the Gracie family lineage. Over the next three decades, he immersed himself in the art, learning from icons like Royce, Rickson, Rolker, and Rorion Gracie, as well as training at the legendary Gracie Academy in Torrance, CA, with Helio, Rener, and Ryron Gracie. His relentless pursuit of mastery earned him his 4th-degree black belt, reflecting decades of dedication to preserving the authenticity of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Service and Dedication Beyond the Mats

A U.S. Navy veteran and a 25-year veteran of the U.S. Secret Service, Professor Jim has brought the principles of discipline, respect, and service into every aspect of his career. His work included high-stakes global assignments and expertise in electronic and explosive countermeasures. Certified as a Defensive Tactics Instructor by the Maryland Police Training Commission, he shared his martial arts expertise with law enforcement professionals, ensuring they were equipped with practical, effective self-defense skills.

In 2007, Professor Jim founded Calvert MMA Academy® to bring authentic Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to Southern Maryland. Later, he expanded his vision with Lineage BJJ®, honoring the teachings of Helio Gracie and emphasizing self-defense, discipline, and personal growth.

Both academies offer state-of-the-art facilities, innovative programs, and a welcoming community that supports students of all ages and experience levels.
