Coach Bray Dunaway

Coach Bray Dunaway brings a thoughtful, well-rounded approach to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Lineage BJJ—combining technical depth, calm instruction, and a genuine commitment to helping students grow.

Bray helps lead the 6:00 AM classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and also teaches the Monday evening class, where students get a chance to explore a different side of Jiu-Jitsu in a focused, structured environment.

A Coach with Real-World Experience

Bray’s background is rooted in discipline, accountability, and problem-solving. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, he served as a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot and instructor, operating in demanding environments where preparation and clear decision-making mattered every day.

That experience shows up on the mats—not as intensity or pressure, but as calm leadership and thoughtful instruction. Bray understands how people learn under stress and how to break complex ideas into manageable steps.

Technical, Modern Jiu-Jitsu—Taught Clearly

Bray began his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training in 2018 while stationed in San Diego, where he trained extensively in No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu, including time learning from the 10th Planet system. His training has taken him across the United States and around the world, exposing him to a wide range of styles, instructors, and approaches in both gi and no-gi.

At Lineage BJJ, Bray brings that experience into the classroom in a way that’s approachable and practical. His Monday evening class—often jokingly referred to as “Meniscus Monday”—focuses on modern No-Gi concepts such as leg locks, foot locks, heel hooks, and positional control, all taught with an emphasis on safety, understanding, and proper progression.

Students appreciate that Bray doesn’t rush techniques or assume prior knowledge. He explains the why behind the movements and helps students apply them thoughtfully in live training.

6 AM Classes with Purpose

Bray’s early-morning classes are a favorite among adults who want to start their day with focused training. These sessions are structured, efficient, and welcoming—ideal for beginners, experienced students, and anyone looking to train consistently before work or family commitments.

The environment is calm, respectful, and supportive. Students leave feeling challenged, confident, and ready for the rest of the day.

A Coach Who Balances Training and Family

Outside the academy, Bray is a devoted husband and father of three. He understands the balance between training, family, and professional life, and that perspective shapes how he teaches.

He is approachable, patient, and genuinely invested in the people he works with. Whether someone is brand new to Jiu-Jitsu or expanding their technical game, Bray meets them where they are and helps them progress at a pace that makes sense.

Training with Coach Bray Dunaway

Training with Bray means learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in an environment that values intelligence, safety, and steady improvement. His classes are ideal for students who enjoy technical detail, clear instruction, and a coach who brings both real-world experience and a sense of humor to the mats.

If you’re looking for morning training with purpose or a modern No-Gi class that’s challenging and fun, Coach Bray Dunaway is someone you’ll want to train with.
